Constantijn de Grote was de zoon van Constantius Chlorus die hem op zijn sterfbed in York tot Caesar uitriep (306 na chr.). In 307 werd hij Augustus. Hij was de eerste keizer die zich tot het christendom bekeerde. Dat deed hij na de slag bij de Milvische brug waarin Maxentius werd verslagen. Hij liet in de slag het christenteken (labarum) op de schilden van zijn manschappen schilderen en droeg daarna de overwinning op aan de christelijke god. In 324 werd hij alleenheerser, na Licinius verslagen te hebben in diverse veldslagen. In 337 stierf hij in Nicomedia.
