Marcus Aurelius, 161-180. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 2,96 g,), Rome, 172. M ANTONINVS - AVG TR P XXVII Laureate head of Marcus Aurelius to right. Rev. IMP VI - COS III Minerva seated to left on throne, holding, in her right hand, Victory proffering wreath to right, and holding a scepter with her left; grounded shield ornamented with aegis at her side. Cohen 280 cor. (Roma). MIR 18, 232-4/30 cor. (Roma). RIC 259 cor. (Roma). Good fine
The goddess on the reverse of this coin is universally termed Roma in the standard reference works, but she should almost certainly be considered to be Minerva due to her decidedly non-Amazonian mode of dress; especially since both of her breasts are covered and she has an aegis-shield.
