Octavian, autumn 30-summer 29 BC. Denarius (Silver, 21 mm, 3.14 g, 7 h), Brundisium or Rome. IMP Head of youthful Mars to right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet. Rev. CAESAR Shield, [with eight-pointed star at its centre], lying over sword and spear in saltire. BMC 644. BN 87. Cohen 44. CRI 428. RIC² 274. This issue is clearly related to military success but the specific meaning is elusive. The type doesn’t fit with the other Actian victory coins and perhaps it relates to a different battle or victory. The reverse shield with central comet relates to the deified Julius Caesar. aVF
