S · P · Q · R · PARENTI - CONS · SVO, toga picta over tunica palmata flanked on left by legionary aquila and on right by wreath / CAESARI above, AVGVSTO in exergue, triumphal quadriga advancing right, ornamented with one Victory and surmounted by a small galloping quadriga. This unusual issue depicts consular ornamenta -- the garments worn by triumphing generals and the Consul, nominally head of the Roman State. These included the tunica palmata, a tunic embroidered with golden palmettes, and the toga picta, an elaborately embroidered purple toga.
