Vespasian - Securitas with counter mark of LEG X extremely rare! (JA23108)

In a NGC-holder. Vespasian Æ As. Lugdunum, AD 71. IMP CAESAR VESPASIAN AVG COS III, laureate bust to right, globe at point of bust / SECVRITAS AVGVSTI, Securitas seated to right, holding sceptre, altar and torch to right; SC in exergue. RIC II.2 1174, Howgego 733 for counter mark. 10,91g, 28 mm

This coin has a counter mark of LEG X Fretensis. That is extremely rare on a official coin (they were struck mostly on local currency). Playing a significant role during the First Jewish War, the Legio X Fretensis remained stationed in Judaea and Samaria until sometime during the fourth century CE. Encamped at Caesarea and Sebaste, these countermarks were added to validate worn coinage for use in the camps and surrounding towns. The countermarked coinage appears to have fallen out of use by the time of the Bar Kochba Revolt, being replaced by sufficient amounts of local civic coinage.
