AEOLIS. Myrina. Pseudo-autonomous issue. Assarion (?) (Bronze, 18 mm, 3.71 g, 6 h), time of Valerian I and Gallienus, 253-268. •ΜΥΡЄΙΝΑ Turreted and draped bust of Amazon Myrina to left. Rev. •ΜΥΡЄΙΝΑΙΩΝ• Tyche standing front, head to left, holding rudder in her right hand and cornucopiae in her left. BMC 41. SNG Copenhagen 239. SNG München 590. Minor edge fault, otherwise, good very fine.

Myrina was one of several predominantly Ionian cities that ascribed their foundation to Amazons, along with Smyrna, Sinope, Kyme, Gryne, Ephesos, Pitania, Magnesia, Clete, Pygela, Latoreria and Amastris. On this coin we see the Amazon Myrina depicted in characteristic fashion with one breast bared  associated with Amazons. The turreted crown conflates her with Tyche, and alludes to her mythical foundation of the city.
