Maximinus II Æ Nummus. Thessalonica, AD 308-310. MAXIMINVS FIL AVGG, laureate head to right / GENIO CAESARIS, Genius standing facing, head to left, holding patera and cornucopiae; * – Δ across fields, •SM•TS• in exergue. RIC VI 32a; C. 42. 7.83 g, 26 mm. Very Fine and very scarce!

Bestowed upon Constantine I and Maximinus II in AD 308 to placate them (Licinius I having achieved the rank of Augustus without having ever been Caesar, and indeed being promoted over Maximinus II), the title of Filius Augustorum (= Son of the Augusti) was swiftly dropped from the coinage as relations continued to deteriorate. Thus, coins such as the present piece are particularly rare.
