First called Thoana, the town was at the foot of Taurus where the surrounding plain was called Tyanitis. Under Caracalla the city became the "Antoniana colonia Tyana". It was captured from Queen Zenobia by Aurelian in 272 AD. In 371 Valens made Tyana the capital of Cappadocia. The ruins of Tyana - the remains of a Roman aqueduct and of sepulchral grottoes are at Kilisse-Hissar.
