Commentary.

This provincial bronze coin was issued at Sidon, metropolis of Phoenicia, during the reign of Elagabalus, and honors his grandmother Julia Maesa, whose political influence was instrumental in the Severan dynasty’s survival. The reverse legend emphasizes Sidon’s elevated status as Colonia Aurelia Pia Metropolis, a title reflecting both imperial favor and civic pride. The depiction of three military standards with eagles underscores the city’s loyalty to Rome and its association with the Roman army, a particularly resonant theme given Julia Maesa’s role in securing military support for Elagabalus’ accession. Such imagery reinforces the connection between dynastic legitimacy, military power, and provincial allegiance.
