Caracalla, 28 January 198 - 8 April 217 A.D.
This interesting reverse composition commemorates the wars in northern Britain. The two outer figures are holding reeds, the rivers probably being Tyne and Eden, while the third, central female figure must be Britannia.

Caracalla, 198-217. Denarius (Silver, 20 mm, 3.27 g, 6 h), Rome, 207. ANTONINVS PIVS AVG Laureate head of Caracalla to right. Rev. PONTIF TR P X COS II Caracalla standing front, head to right, holding inverted spear in his right hand and parazonium in his left; to left, river god reclining on urn to right; to right, two bound captives seated to left. BMC 555. Cohen 441. RIC 96. The reverse a bit weak and with an edge split, otherwise, good very fine.

From the Joseph Markowitz Collection (1897-1981), brought to Israel in 1949 and kept in the family ever since.
