MACEDON. Akanthos. Circa 500-470 BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 8 mm, 0.34 g). Bull's head to right. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. SNG ANS 51. SNG Ashmolean 2221. SNG Lockett 1291. Good fine.

The bull's head hemiobols of Akanthos were issued during the 1st quarter of the 5th century. They seem to fall into two stylistic groups: the earlier has the folds of the skin on the bull's neck composed of overlapping dashes, while the later group, has those folds represented by striated lines. This coin is from the first group.
