In AD 208, Septimius Severus travelled to Britain and launched a military campaign beyond Hadrian's Wall against the Caledonians. Accompanying him on this campaign were his wife Julia Domna and their sons Caracalla and Geta. Septimius and Caracalla led the campaign until the emperor fell ill in AD 210, after which point Caracalla took over as sole commander. Following Septimius' death in early 211 at York, Caracalla settled for peace with the Caledonians and the border was withdrawn south to Hadrian's Wall.
